Carpet Cleaning Tips

Your carpet is one of the most important features of your home. It can make the difference between your home looking clean and fresh, or tired and drab.

Where possible, choose a wool carpet, its texture and resilience means that it is easy to clean, harder to dent and less prone to soiling.

Carpet wear and tear is increased by the amount of dirt and soil that is trampled into it; oily dirt being the worst offender. At Vax we recommend you follow seven easy steps to carpet heaven:

  1. Use doormats at entrances and at any transition from a hard surface onto carpet. This will greatly reduce the amount of soil transferred onto your carpet.
  2. Where possible remove your shoes - and wipe your pet's paws - before walking on your carpet.
  3. Vacuuming should be carried out at least twice per week on areas where the carpet receives heavy traffic and three times per week if you have pets.
  4. Frequent vacuuming prevents dirt build up. The longer you leave it between vacuuming, the less clean you will be able to get your carpet. Slow and firm strokes with the vacuum will achieve more than hurrying. For a thorough clean complete four backward and forward passes over the same area.
  5. Vacuuming doesn't remove all odours, so once per month sprinkle your carpet with baking soda before you vacuum (especially on your pet's favourite spots).
  6. Always clean up spills and accidents as they happen. Blot with a clean, absorbent cloth - do not rub! Most dirt can be removed if attended to quickly. Only when left to react does it become a stain.
  7. Deep clean your carpet with a Vax carpet washer every 6 - 12 months.
